Community land trusts central to urban renewal for the Black community

Community land trusts central to urban renewal for the Black community From Vancouver to Halifax, new community land trusts are forming in support of affordable housing and other community-strengthening initiatives. Some of the most important are those being led by Black communities as they redress injustices and create their own way forward, grounded in the principles of equity and community. In Nova Scotia, the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Land Trust formed in 2022. Originally, this settlement near Halifax was home to a group of 500 Black refugees from the War of 1812. In the 1970s, the community faced land expropriation by municipal and provincial governments. The land trust was formed to preserve “the cultural heritage and economic prosperity of our neighborhoods, while creating opportunities for Black families and individuals to access affordable housing, economic opportunities, and the tools necessary for building intergenerational wealth.” learn more here Other News Sector News Community land trusts central to urban renewal for the Black community October 16, 2024 Events General Call for Proposals October 16, 2024 Events Housing Central Conference October 16, 2024 Sector News Province Launches Community Housing Capital Fund to Protect Renters October 16, 2024 Events Prevention of Youth Homelessness International Conference October 16, 2024 BCHC Copyright 2024 Black Communities Technical Housing Resource Centre. Why Housing First failed in Canada

Why Housing First failed in Canada Homelessness in Canada is worsening, with up to 300,000 people expected to experience it this year. Despite the federal government’s efforts, including the 2017 Reaching Home Initiative, homelessness has continued to rise due to the unsustainable housing market. Finland’s successful Housing First approach highlights the importance of affordable housing and state involvement in housing infrastructure, which Canada lacks. The current Canadian approach, focused on private-sector partnerships, has failed to curb the crisis. To end homelessness, Canada must prioritize affordable, non-market housing and provide sufficient income support, but this requires strong political will. read more here More Post’s Sector News Why Housing First failed in Canada October 16, 2024 Sector News National Housing Strategy Research and Planning Fund October 16, 2024 Sector News Federal Government Launches new $1.5b program to build a new generation of co-op housing March 18, 2024
